Personal statement for uni application

With games there is so many genre’s in which the artistic talents have no boundaries.
Games; something I grew up with. From a young age the adventure caught me. They had captured me since I first held the control to my PlayStation One. The pixelated art up of the old ancient treasures waiting to be found with the various dangerous obstacles found in my path. Making me feel like a strong action packed hero. The adventure and the hidden secrets engaged my mind, unlocking new places that never seemed feasible to my younger self.

The modern realistic graphics in games has fascinated me, the progress made over a relatively short period of time from 2D pixel art to photorealism. It made me wonder how these games where made and how they have developed over time. With the tenacity of any gamer, I started practicing and perfecting my own artistic skill. I found that I started drawing different things, but was eager to push my development further. I wanted to explore deeper and understand how games are created. How they created buildings, assets, players. How they created the motion of a person’s gait when walking, running. How the textures where made. This curiosity and wanting to explore more, brought me to games.

As games have levelled up over the years, I feel I have also levelled up through my education of games, I enrolled at Birmingham Metropolitan College, James Watt in 2016 to study Games Art and have learned various skills such as 3D modelling with Maya, Mudbox along with traditional 2D drawing and digital painting in Photoshop.
I have developed these skills through projects to create digital paintings for concept art, 3D modelling, UVing, texturing and rendering assets and environments in Maya and presenting them in a professional format on my online blog. My skills have advanced with my drawing ability, creating more detailed pieces to speeding up my drawing process. It has advanced my skills with adding colour, tones and textures with the wide array of tools to choose from. My knowledge with Photoshop is continuing to grow, learning new tools and experimenting to see what works out best. Gaining more experience along the way and best of all doing something I enjoy on my level 3 UAL Diploma in Art and Design (Game Art) course.

The way games have evolved over the years has captured more and more people’s interest and unlocking the different generation’s imaginations with T-rex’s, Extra-terrestrial life and even adventure. Unlocking achievements gives the feeling of satisfaction and achievement that can be hardly obtained in day to day life. It entices others to become more immersed and venture deeper into their new found mystery adventure, who knows what lies next around the corner. Games not only make a person’s mind work and react faster in a split second, whether reacting to a threat of making a choice that will later affect the gameplay and story line. With games design there is a wide range of emotions that can be felt during gameplay, sadness, fear, horror, satisfaction, anticipation, happiness. In the virtual world anything can be challenged with a vivid imagination. Things can exist that shouldn’t be possible in reality, which in turn can boggle the mind.

For a long time now, games have been a passion of mine. I have taken steps to turn this into a career by studying it through college. As I look forward to the future, I believe that studying with you at university will guide me through the next step in life and help me to get closer to my goal of working within the games industry.
